A public art installation in Florida crafted by Dixie Friend Gay, renowned artist and creator of two public art projects in The Woodlands Town Center, is one of 45 public art works to be recognized among the best in the country by the National Arts Conference.
At the annual Public Art Year in Review conference on June 22, two independent public art experts – Boston Architectural Center President Ted Landsmark and environmental artist Jody Pinto – presented their choices for the most exemplary, innovative permanent or temporary public art works created or debuted in 2007.
Dixie Friend Gay’s Ephemeral Everglades, installed in 2007 at the Port of Miami, Florida, was one of the works selected for this distinguished recognition. Gay’s works of art in The Woodlands include “At the Water’s Edge”, nine glass mosaic tile panels depicting a variety of wildlife native to southeast Texas.
The panels are installed in niches beneath the Waterway Avenue Bridge on The Woodlands Waterway®. Gay is pictured here installing “At the Water’s Edge”. Another piece entitled “Treasures from Grandma’s Purse” is installed at the interactive children’s fountain at Waterway Square.

The Rob Fleming Park Murals located in the Lodge at Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands’ newest Village of Creekside Park, received the 2008 Community Award during the recent Spectrum Awards Ceremony at the International Conference for Tile and Stone Manufacturers in Orlando, Florida. The Spectrum Awards celebrate creativity and achievement in the use of ceramic tile and are one of the most coveted awards in the tile and stone manufacturers’ industry, according to Bob Bruce, anager of recreation facilities development for The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC).
“The Rob Fleming Park Murals reflect the detailed sketches of the late Rob Fleming, Texas Parks and Wildlife naturalist and artist, who captured the flavor of Texas through his artwork,” Bruce stated.
“The project consisted of two murals set on both sides of a massive stone fireplace within the Rob Fleming Lodge in the park.” Each mural features 84 individual 6” X 6” ceramic tiles. The award-winning project team included Motawi Tileworks, project tile manufacturer; landscape architect Clark Condon Associates; David A. Suplee Architectural Illustrators who helped illustrate Fleming’s sketches; tile contractor D.L. Meacham Construction Company; and The Woodlands Development Company, developer.
