The Fun of the Irish in The Woodlands

Post Category: Community — Greg Flory @ 9:15 am

We officially honor good ol’ St. Patrick on Tuesday, March 17, but Goose’s Acre, the official Irish pub of The Woodlands, is celebrating throughout the weekend to lead up to this special day.

On Thursday, March 12, enjoy the third annual Sexy Kilt Contest. Both men and women are welcome. Contact the restaurant to sign up.

On Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14, Goose’s Acre will host some great rock music. Irish rock band The Ruse will take the stage on Friday, and the Kris Harper Band will be there Saturday. Both shows start at 10 p.m., and various promo girls will be all over both nights.

At the third annual St. Baldrick’s Day party, on Sunday, March 15, you can shave your head for charity! If that’s a little much, simply donate a little money for one of the brace souls. Find out more at stbaldricks.org.

It all culminates on Monday, March 16, with an Irish Whiskey Dinner. Enjoy a selection of five Irish whiskeys accompanied by a four-course meal created by Goose’s Acre chef David Medina. Space is limited, so make reservations. Dinner is $45/person.

Goose’s Acre is at 21 Waterway in The Woodlands. Visit thegoosesacre.com for more information.

Parade of Floats Launches Waterway® Arts Festival – April 4

Post Category: Community — Greg Flory @ 4:16 pm

The Floating Art Parade will kick off The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival on April 4. The parade features floating art pieces created and designed by local businesses and organizations. The floats parade down The Waterway from Town Green Park to The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and then back again. The floats remain moored for public viewing throughout the festival.

Participants are asked to design and create a float reflecting this year’s theme: “Outer Space.” The best entry receives The Waterway Cup, a unique piece of art designed by one of the festival artists. Festival jurors vote for the best entry.
Festival organizers have also put out a call for entries for the annual Student Art Scholarship Program. Local high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to create original artwork for display at the event and the chance to earn scholarship money for their efforts. The deadline to enter is March 5, 2009.

The Student Art Scholarship Program recognizes exemplary student achievement in the visual arts. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council has awarded $45,000 in art scholarships over the past three years. The deadline to enter is March 5, 2009. See the Festival’s website (linked below) for more information.

The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival features more than 200 national and regional artists of various mediums selling their original creations. Last year, approximately 15,000 people attended the two-day festival which takes place along The Woodlands Waterway from The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel alongside The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and culminating at Town Green Park. Festival hours are 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
